Version: Working draft

Documents, folders, and versions

Keep a document's revisions together when it represents the same piece of work. A replacement creates a new version of that document; a separate upload is useful when the file should be a different document.

Before you begin

Open the correct workspace and project. You need permission to read its documents, plus the appropriate create or update permission to upload or replace files. Start an upload while connected and keep the source file available until Bridge confirms the result.

Add documents on the web

  1. Open the project's Documents area.
  2. Navigate to the folder that should contain the files.
  3. Choose Upload Files and select the files to add.
  4. Wait for the upload to finish and confirm the new entries appear.
  5. Open a document to check its name and content.

The Documents area also provides Create folder. Use folders for a browsing structure people can follow, and rename or move entries through the available item actions. Check the destination before confirming a move.

Uploading and preparing a viewing preview are separate steps. A saved file may still need processing before its preview is ready. See viewing and finding documents.

Replace a document's file

  1. Open the existing document.
  2. Choose Replace file from its available document tools.
  3. Choose the replacement file and add a version note if useful.
  4. Confirm the replacement and wait for Bridge to finish saving it.
  5. Open Version history and confirm the new version is present.

A version note such as “Updated the equipment list” helps teammates understand why the content changed. Replacing the file keeps it associated with the existing document.

Review or restore an earlier version

  1. Open Version history for the document.
  2. Find the version you need using its version number and available details.
  3. View or download that version to confirm it is the intended content.
  4. If you need it to become the latest content, choose Restore as new version and confirm.

Restoring creates another version. It does not rewrite the historical entry in place. Check the new latest version after restoring.

iPhone and iPad

Open the project's Documents area and use its upload or item menus. The document detail screen includes version information and Replace File when your access allows it. The native detail screen and web Version history dialog present this information differently.

Mobile version details also provide Download for Offline and Restore as New Version when available. A restore can be queued while offline; review its result after reconnecting, especially if a newer version was saved meanwhile.

Mobile can retain downloaded versions for offline use. Downloaded content can be older than the latest server version; check any offline or version notice before editing. Some supported mobile editors offer Save new version. Saving an edited document and exporting a local copy are different actions, so confirm the document's version history when you intend to update the project.

If saving encounters a newer version

Another person may save a version while your replacement or edit is in progress. Read the conflict message, reopen the latest content, and decide whether your file should become a new latest version. Do not repeatedly start a second upload before checking whether the first attempt was saved.

Stored source files, retained versions, and generated viewing files can all contribute to usage. Read the storage usage explanation when planning a large document library.
